How can I make the content I pull in more relevant?

Separating the signal from the noise

People post about all kinds of stuff. It can be hard to separate the signal from the noise at times. Thankfully, FeedMagnet provides a super robust filtering system that can look at each post as it comes in and determine if it is relevant to your topic or not. It requires a little bit of creativity on your part, but once finely-tuned, you can have feeds that are way more relevant that any plain search on Twitter, Flickr, or Google could provide.

Your magic weapon: the include filter

The include filter let you look at the content of an update and only include it in the feed if it passes the test by using the right combination of words. Consider these scenarios that would both start with search topics for the word "alamo":

  • If you are building a feed for Alamo rental cars, you might want anyone using the word "alamo" AND one or more words like car, rental, or airport
  • If your feed was for The Alamo in Texas, you'd want "alamo" again, but this time they'd have to use words like mission, crocket, "san antonio", or "remember the" along with it

Getting fancy

More than just a list of words that have to be included, the filter syntax lets you do advanced logic operations and look for multiple matches from a set of words. Here are a few examples:

  • "alamo" AND ("mission", "crocket", "san antonio", "remember the", "texas"):2 — this will require the word alamo and any two of the words inside parenthesis
  • ("alamo" OR "quicksilver") AND ("rental" OR "car") — Quicksilver is Alamo's frequent renter program - so this filter would match on "alamo rental", "quicksilver car", and a few other combinations that are likely people talking about the rental car company
